In the western part of the Malaga province in southern Spain, the region of Andalucia is the Costa del Sol,   a region which includes coastal towns and small villages. The name is often translated to ”the sun coast” in Norwegian.  What used to be a coast with small and calm fishermen villages, is now a world famous tourist area and totally changed durint he last half of the twentieth century.

Costa del Sol stretches westwards along the mediterranean coast from Nerja, past Malaga to the Cadiz province.  Here we find  cities such as  Fuengirola, Marbella, Puerto Banus, Estepona, Torremolinos, Nerja, Benalmadena, Mijas, San Pedro de Alcantara, Velez-Malaga, Torrox.

Since the bronze ages there have been settlers here, and the area has been dominated by foreigners from different cultures such as cartagenans, romans, vandals, westgoethers and maurers, before ”Reconquista”.

In the nineteen fifies, this area was discovered by the tourist industry, and has since then been a popular destination for foreign tourists, both seeking sunny beaches and cultural experiences.

The area is largely urbanized and populated all along the coastline.  The architectural style is a blend of small white houses and large skyscrapers, especially in the typical tourist towns.
